Induct = less torque?

Fitted the infamous piece of Antipodean tubing the other day and had the chance to take the bike out for a proper shake-down yesterday. I've never been in any doubt as to Lennie's induct's effect on the urgency of the bike's acceleration at the higher end of the rev range, but I am somewhat disturbed at the harm it does to the lower end torque of the engine.
Whereas before I could do a brisk overtake in top gear from about 60 mph (try that on a VFR!) if I'm feeling lazy, the bike now needs to be be down a gear at least. It also doesn't have the instant shove at initial throttle openings eg when pulling away from a standing start.
So much so I'm rather tempted to remove it and go back to the OEM induct, trading off some top end go for some more instant oomph low down.

Hmm interesting!, I finally got around to fitting my induct today along with K& N filter. Am having trouble aligning the front section of the induct to the 2 mounting holes on the bracket, I used the rubber gromet off the OE induct to join the two pieces together...did you have any such problem?

Steve - the way to do it, as I've found, is to join the 2 tubes together whilst they're off the bike, then offer the whole lot up in one go. The front (2-holed) bracket then goes behind the front mounting lug on the bike. Then it's possible to wiggle the induct around until it fits ok. The filter end is a snug fit onto the airbox and needs a bit of gentle persuasion.

Thanks Richard, I'll take it off and start again. do you have a K&N? perhaps it would help? I'll let you know what I find when I take it out for a run later

Yup - K&N plus Laser exhaust and chip.

Hi Richard
Well there's somut a miss somewhere, thats for sure not unless that pipe and chip don't like the induct, when i put mine on it was like chalk and cheese, although i said to Gus this afternoon if ever get my hands on a secondhand cat replacement might try the original system, which would be novel!!.

Chris - yup, did surprise me somewhat. Mal's old S went like stink (once I'd got rid of that poxy Remus) but that was running the BBPower chip as opposed to my Laser (otherwise indentical set-up).
This one goes well above 5000rpm but seems like, if not exactly gasping, it's not pulling as hard as it should below that figure.
Need to get some dyno time too - make sure it's fuelling correctly across the board.
As to the standard pipe etc I've always reckoned (if you're not bothere about a quieter bike) it's the best way to go in terms of bangs per buck.

To be honest i'm waiting for Bob to be the guinea pig at PDQ as much for fact they'll have some data and then we'll have a decent bench mark with or without a P/Commander

Strangely enough my bike has less low-down grunt with the Staintune fitted. It feels like it's really lean, and I worried that fitting a K&N and Lennies as well could only make things worse, unless the injection system has some element of closed loop control.
It makes a GREAT noise though and is much happier to rev - I feel much less guilty thrashing it! I reckon a power commander would be a good if expensive way to go, especially when I have the 2200cc big-bore kit fitted!

Alan - are you running a chip of any description??
I'm still tempted to get the BBPower chip, where at least there's some semblance of adjustability.
Anyone fancy a Laser chip to fit a pre-Jun 2000 S? Only 50 miles old.

Just the BMW one so I'd be interested to find out what can be done. How is the BB adjusted?

The fuelling maps are changed by the use of jumper leads in the cat code plug socket, situated in the l/h relay box, just inside the fairing. There are 5 different 'stages' which can be adjusted, plus the original one.

Im just wondring which stage to set the BB power chip to when my lennies comes... i have y piece, chip, k and n and road laser end cans.
All this talk of running lean is a bit of a worry

I fitted my induct in the week, but slid the rubber supplied onto the airbox tube, fitted that, then fitted the front bit and slid the rubber over, but it lined up straight away.
The y piece and laser cans are on, and it sounds really nice, (I think!)
I put the bbpower chip at stage 2, and it seems ok.
I haven't noticed any loss of torque low down, just seems to rev quicker, and sounds a lot better.

Hi All,
Archie,
If you have a Staintune and Lennies fitted then you need to chip, I would recommend an FIM chip from Pro Twins in Godstone Surrey. FIM is mapped exactly for the modes you have so there is no setting up, just plug and play. If you PM me I can give you more details.
Ricard,
Do your Lasers have baffles, I find with my Staintunes that when the baffles are out it takes more revs to pull off and is not so torquey lower down and is more vibey, put them back in and it changes. I have a lennies fitted and found it to rev a lot quicker.
Andrew
