Valve Clearances & Cam 'float' setting?

When adjusting the valve clearances today on the cylinder head that had been removed and stripped of it's cam/rocker assembly (the cam wasn't removed from its journal). there was an extreme notchy feel/sound when the valves transitioned from fully open on the high point of the cam to begin closing.

After stripping the rocker assembly twice, I traced this notchiness to the cam sprocked bolt not being fully tightened. I knew the bolt hadn't been done and was surprised that it made any difference when hand turning the engine (plugs out) for adjusting valve clearances. Hand turning the engine with the rocker assembly removed and fingers pressed in the buckets produced no notchyness.

After tightening the sprocket, things were a lot smoother, however I am wondering if is there is any lateral float gap setting on the cam assembly that should be set when fitting cam assembly back in the head. I have set the vertical play in the rocker arms.

Now there's an almost imperceptible feel when the valves start closing but I think I might be paranoid or it may be the cam chain relaxing as the valve springs pressure is releaved.

Dunno Julian - physics is weird innit - sounds ok to me though. I seem to remember there is often quite a jolt hand turning it over the cams.

The pics look good. How far away are you from firing it up then?

Fading light prevented fitting the zorsts today.

Will turn her over on the battery next week without plugs and maybe fire her up.

The cam sprocket is located on a key type arrangement on the camshaft...it is easy for it not to fully locate....and then when you do the bolt up it don't sit correctly.I very much doubt if the end float would go out of tolerance in the working life of an engine as all the wear forms from the up down motion of the cam/vs valves.....nothing of concern me thinks.

Ta. I'd only done the sprocket up finger tight so I guess it wasn't sitting on the shaft properly and pulling to one side under the pressure of the valve springs relaxing.

I did check the tab on the cam but will double check to be sure.
