Anyone tried removing the gear box, how hard is it to get at??
My gear bearings are shagged so want to remove the gearbox and then let BMW change them..

Removing the box is not difficult, but it's a bit of a nause cos you have to support the bike without the stand (you have to remove the CFrame, and pretty well everything else - take a look at http://www.compers.demon.co.uk/clutch.htm ) - took me probably 2-4 hours to get it off, then again to put it back. Be more of a problem if the exhaust bolts shear or something - you'll need a good set of tools too.

I've got a spare 22k gearbox on my bench at home (yours for about 2.5 SPC labour hours!) - if you live close we could slip that one in - be a shit load cheaper (my rates are a lot less than BM dealers )

how did you support the bike with out the stand?? did you use an engine hoist and ropes?

I used an engine hoist to lift the bike off the stand then let it down onto a car wheel and some blocks - probably could have left it swinging on the hoist but you have to initially support the vike WITH the CFrame on but not on the stand when you undo all the frame bolts - some are V tight and would be a bitch to undo on an untethered bike

Hi Jason,

I had a bit of an off the other day, no damage to me, but managed to snap the lug of the front cast frame section ( the bit the front suspension and fairing frame bolts to). Have you got one amongst your many assorted bits I have cash waiting Sods law, there was one on ebay the other day but it's gone now

By the way, Skint, when I put my new gearbox in I supported the engine by bolting a piece of 2"x 4" wood to the bottom and supported it with two axle stands, worked a treat

Crucial, how much was your gear box??

Jason, i am in northampton, so not near.. Why not support it initially on the C/Stand then hoist it up and support when you get to the gear box removal stage?? How long did it take you?? And what wa the reason for removal?

Which bit is that exactly? Is that the large wishbone shaped bit that goes up under the ignition that someone had up for about £100 on e-bay the other day (which I have, but I'll have to take gander at - I think it's OK - and will be a LOT less than £100!), or the front subframe assemby that the front faring and lights bolt onto (which I don't have, but one went a few months ago for about 75p or something stupid).

I'm out tonight and not back till Sun - if it's the large wishbone bit then I'll take a pic and send it to you (e-mail me at jason@compers.demon.co.uk so I can return a pic), otherwise, send me a pic of the bit you want and I'll take a look.

Skint - Northampton is not too far - I could bring the box up for you - £150 delivered if you want it.

You can initially support it on the CStand on blocks, then hoist it again after, but you still have to hoist it up in the first place to take the weight off the centre stand which is obviously attached to the CFrame.

I reckon you could do the whole thing in a day or a weekend certainly (providing you don't snap anything!) - I think BM quote about 10 hours for a clutch - be quicker if their were 2 of you

Hi Skint, it was approx £420 from motorworks (only done 6000 miles). I checked at a dealers to see how much it would cost to replaced my knackered input shaft, with the relevant bearings seals etc it was gonna cost a alot more than that and I'd have to wait about a month Replacing the gearbox is pretty easy if a little time consuming. Armed with a socket set, a lump of 2"x 4" and a large hammer you'll have it done in no time

Jason, it's the cast bit, that the top of the front suspension bolts to and the top yoke pivots on. I'll try to email you a picture over the weekend.
