Glowing headers

Visited bike at my brother's tonight - knee still won't bend so I've not been able to bring it home since the off at Lydden...
Anyway, fired it up and left it ticking over for a bit to put a bit of charge in the battery (does this work?) - after about 2-3 mins of minor throttle blipping (never more than about 3500 rpm) - noticed the header pipes (?) (the bits coming out of the cylinders) were glowing orange
.
Is this normal?
I've never noticed it before in 18K of use.
The bike has been standing since the Saturday before last - fired up first time and there was oil in it...
Ade
PS it was nice to see it again, kind of missing just having it around (never mind riding it)
