Visited bike at my brother's tonight - knee still won't bend so I've not been able to bring it home since the off at Lydden...

Anyway, fired it up and left it ticking over for a bit to put a bit of charge in the battery (does this work?) - after about 2-3 mins of minor throttle blipping (never more than about 3500 rpm) - noticed the header pipes (?) (the bits coming out of the cylinders) were glowing orange .

Is this normal?

I've never noticed it before in 18K of use.

The bike has been standing since the Saturday before last - fired up first time and there was oil in it...

Yep, that's normal. The longer you leave it, the further down the header it glows!

Not recommended for long periods, tho'...

oh and having the engine tick over won't really charge the battery - has to be over about 2k I would say before the alternator provides enough juice to actually charge the battery and you'd need about 30 mins of running to replace what you used starting the bike up.


Best to stick a charger on it to be honest.

If you have the time to take off both side panels and possibly remove the petrol tank... Production engineering at it's finest.

You have to do that on an R6 too You want a nice little socket in the side you do.

R6 has an optimate adapter conveniently fitted by previous owner...

Previously charged up S using power socket - wired it to the optimate adapter which worked a treat..

until I pinched the male power bit to attach to me autocom...

if bike fails to start tomorrow (its officially coming home then regardless of knee condition..) autocom gets it temporarily..

bike alarms, aren't they great - guaranteed to not go off when a thief is wheeling the bike down the road into a van, and to go off:

at 3am because a cat brushed a whisker within a 6 foot radius....
on the ferry no matter what mode its in...
when you are cleaning it despite attempted disarming
whilst attaching luggage at 6am outside a hotel full of sleeping guests
etc... etc...
