How often do you change the oil and tyres - every 6000 miles or so? Every 3000 miles for soft tyres? Hardly a justification foir carrying around a lump of scrap metal the rest of the time.
Checking the oil? It's not difficult without a stand.
And you're wrong - the weight isn't the only disadvantage (hardly, on a bike weighing 200kg) - it was lack of ground clearance that prompted me to remove mine and I haven't regretted that decision.

I guess Stevie, there is no replacement for the R1100S or as Mackenzie said month's ago in two that a lot of otherwise would have been dead certain R1200S buyers changed their minds by the lack of practicality the old R1100S had.Just wished someone would figure out how to put that 110 horse R1200RT engine into the "old" S...Appeasing the magazines did not work. They still labeled it as a sports-tourer by heart but it isn't one by the uusual short list of options that would have made it more versatile...great marketing!
Happy new year to all you guys riding the eleven or twelve S !
Chris
PS:The good thing I save a lot of money, having to work less, the less I want the richer I am more time to ride and travel and less worries I have...

Has anyone made the perfect bike? do I care I want perfect white goods not a perfect bike, passion/character/good looks any combination of these might rock my boat.
My BCR filled a gap I wanted a bike with shaft comfortable seats easy maintenance and good mpg and bearable looks and ive got few complaints.

Ron,mein dutch ist leider nicht so gut wie dein deutsch darum Dir ganz besonders ein frohes Neues und immer gute Fahrt auf all deinen Wegen im Jahre 2007!
I hope you guys still know how to use the enigma...

Skroggy A well designed centerstand (the R1100S doesn't fit that description) does not scrape an the 1 kilogram weight penalty is easily outweigh by all the practical advantages of a centerstand!
2007;the 9th season on the R1100S!
Can't wait...

Crikey.
1200s useless as a sports bike? Better take it back then!
Oh no, maybe not, nearly forgot the freedom of choice thing
Why would you want the 1200st engine in an 1100s? The 1200st delivers 110bhp at crank, as will an 1100s with good system etc etc... both around 100 at the wheel.
Nice RANTS tho.

I did not say the R1200S is useless as a sportsbike.I said it's as useless as the "real" sportsbikes for touring which is a pity because a) it is a BMW and b) the "real" sportsbike are either faster on paper at least (Duc 1098) or faster and cheaper (GSXR)...
So riders of "real" sportbikes won't care and BMW spots-tourers wont care either because the options list is so artificially short to make it look like a "real" sportsbike...
Why the R1200ST engine in the R1100S.It is smoother and sends another 10-15 horses to the rear in stock form at least but if I have to choose I take the R11S over the R12ST despite the engine...
Hope this helps...

While i think along similar lines, centerstand excepted, thanks but no thanks!!!,the bottom line is, BMW have done what they've done and you've got 2 choices you either like it or lump it.
If i'm really honest,i was cock-a-hoop when i saw the 1200,because i realised BM had saved me the cost of buying a new one, regardless of your one man crusade!!! only time will tell who's right and who's wrong,it's way to early to tell,it took BM 2 years to work out how to sell the 1100!!!!.

The fact is that BMW are a commercial organisation and the R1200S Product Manager will have to carry the can if the product is wrong. To some extent, they are already backtracking by promising a hard pannier option in the New Year (even if the panniers look too small to be useful and the mounting system is a joke).
If sales are below their marketing plan, the PM will get the chop, the R1200S will be deleted and BMW-Fahrer can tell everyone he told them so. BUT it won't have cost those of you who don't like it a penny, and those of us who do like it will still have our bikes.
Now, I have no idea how well they are selling and even less of an idea of how many they had planned to sell. The UK is more sportsbike oriented than the rest of Europe, so even if they turn out to be popular here, it still doesn't mean that they will sell well overall. In any case, I didn't buy mine because I thought it would be a popular bike, I bought it because I like it.

Chris & Stevie fair enough but it is also fair to say that the R1200ST is a slow seller and on the verge or already dropped.
The R1100/1150RS and later R1100S were decent sellers and great sports-tourers and people would like a successor that employs the more powerful and smoother 1200cc boxer engine. Now comes the R1200S.
It is the boxer a lot of BMW riders were looking forward too.Still decent looking recogniceable as a 1100S in a kind of way what Porsce did with the 911.Engine powerful enough to keep things interesting and the weight low like the old light 2-valve 1000s.So far so good and nothing wrong with the R1200S.
But why not offer gooddies that make a BMW a BMW as a option just to gain some cred with the magazines who said itwas a sports-tourer anywys,or some image/poser/lifestyle crowd and piss on the hard core BMW sport tourer parade is just stupid, stupid, stupid as oposed to sport,sport,sport...

I hope the slow sales,as an indicatio you see a lot on the dealer floors but not on the road will bring us the options for a K1200S style bench,K1200R lug-rack,centerstand,centerstand and maybe taller screen and adjustable bars.It would make the bike so muc more attractive for a lot of people and take nothing away from the "sport-cred" of the current one.Anyways, until then, love the one you're with!

Looking through this board and others related to the S it seems we spend a lot of our time talking about how to make our beloved S lighter, sharper and faster to take us more swiftly through all those lovely corners to our next breakfast which we find more easily with our brighter headlights(in winter). Whilst we do this BMW do take note of what we are doing. Whilst still using the same cheap fixings etc that they usually do they have created what we were striving to achieve namely a lighter, sharper and faster bike. It may be slightly down the ladder in performance compared to its Japanese relations but it still gives a lot of pleasure and it seems to sport and tour as well..if you want to take masses of luggage buy a GS or something smaller like a car
Happy New Year,
Henry

Henry I'm with you except no one wanted the new S less practical and useful...stupid!If that had been the case a lt of people would have bought a Mille or 996 instead of the S already years ago...
More power/less weight or the ability to go on a nice holiday trip with the girl on the back?
Happy new year!
Chris
PS:I guess if you are single with the newly available accordeon-minibags and ventura rack if it fits with the bag mounts you can also go on the R12S...But who wants to sit on that hump?No sweet lady lump...
