Speaking as an ex-sheet metalworker NOT WELDER, a grand job, well documented!!
As for the rivets, replace them with either:
1, small bolts hacksawing the shank of the bolt off once the're tight THEN using a small center-punch and knock three dents into the joint between the thread and the nut. An old engineers trick before lock-tight.
or
2, yep, weld them. Not spot or gas but MIG or stick IN the holes, yes in the holes. better penitration and looks neater.

The rivets WILL rot quicker than you may think!!
130 up the mountain mile on me R1100S isn't enough!
