What is "Fast Bikes" beef with the R1200S?

Winger, let's turn it into a song and make some money off it.
The B(MW)eatles... :)
Maybe we can afford what the BM marketing gurus had in mind;a R1200S for solo stints and a R1200(G)S for touring and scaring the missus...
On a even more positive note BIKE in it's latest issue declared the former bestest bike in the world, the mighty VFR being bettered by the (V)F(R)800ST...No boxer but high praise!
A few pages later Ben Welch rated his R1200S longtermer before he had to give it back to BM...
A fast roadbikedeeply talented.It isn't a 999 and even 600's bugger off slowly...Fantastic road bike though,his "perfect" bike.
But he rather had the smoother 110hp RT engine.Very reliable, cheap to maintain and good resale value...Sounds to me I wasn't too far off...
If it was as practical and versatile as the F800ST maybe the new S would have thrown the VFR off it's throne... :?: :!:

Fast Bikes - who cares?

Post by Taz »

Sorry if I am missing something here - but I bought my 1100s because I thought it would be a good bike and have since found it to be a BRILLIANT bike.

Frankly I really don't care what any magazine says about it, or indeed anyone else full stop (although I fully respect that everyone is entitled to their opinion).

I like it and that's what counts for me.

Yours selfishly,
Taz

So when is this 'Old enough to know better' supposed to kick in?

I think the point is, that BMW FHARTER is on a mission to make himself look a numpty mate, thats all. Either that or he needs a kick up the A*se to shift the needle a bit?

PB,now you sound like one of those cranky yanks...
The F800 the new VFR800 sounds pretty good or not?I'll try one but I would probably not trade the R1100S on it because I really like it..Probably would have liked the R12S even better if it wasn't for their stupid marketing ploy not wantingto sell too many bikes...

I think the key word here is FAST. The guys that slag off the 1200S are wannabe racers who can't cut it as a racer otherwise they would be doing it. Instead they write crap for wannabe racer readers who feel the need to compete. If you want a FAST BIKE for racing then fair enough, otherwise there is a REAL biking world out there far removed from the fantasy racer one. Leave them to it.

Actually Fast Bikes started with real racers as their road testers, tha aim being to raise money for their racing exploits. Amongst them were a certain Sean Emmett, Rob Frost and Shane Byrne. Pick up one of their videos, they're hilarious. Unless you were the manufacturer whose test bike they were trashing.

Sadly I agree that the mag today is cr4p.

Haveing had dealings with Schiller and some of the named above, non of the mag guys are normal, not even the current lot at Fast Bike, but beleave me while they may not be racer material, you'll need to be at your best if you bump into e'm on the road,or is that worsed!!!!

BMW-Fahrer - is someone twisting your arm to buy a 12S?

Usually when someone protests so much about a bike it means they really want one but can't afford it..or aren't 'allowed' to buy one.

you can also stop misquoting Ben Miller. He actually said the 12s was his perfect bike and would buy one with his own money.

I've got a 12s and love it, love it, love it. I've also got a 12GS and would rather tour on the 12s as it is so comfortable. Heck I might even splash out on some panniers once I've seen Pete's.

You keep your 11s and let the rest of us decide what we want to ride...whatever that may be.

If we ever meet I'll be next in line after PB

Ben Miller likes the bike but he also said it was stupid to appease to the "Fast Bikes"-alikes and slow sales show...otherwise I and a lot of others would have already traded our old R11S's on a new 12S...
Ad yes we have the money and like the bike except the old one is still more attractive despite it's lower power to weight ratio and I don't mean the looks...
As for "Fast Bikes" Emmet and Byrne for sure could ride;never saw "Polish Pete" at any races, though

No offense, but slow sales compared to what? 1.2mil against Honda's 10mil bikes sold? The most sold bike in EU is the R1200GS, beating all the GSXCBRYZF by a big margin. For Honda, their best sold model last year was I think the CBF600. The crotch rockets get the attention and maybe pull people into the showrooms, but they are hardly the money making machines you make them out to be. Not in absolute sales numbers, nor in revenue. People look at them, admire them and then come to their senses and buy something that fits them better. Why would that be any different for BMW?
