Read in a magazine, when I passed my test in 2004 - some good advice, which I have always adhered to...........

If you are riding in snow, you should stay out of 1st gear, use engine braking rather than wheel-braking, stay "loose" on the bike, avoiding large throttle inputs and keeping your visor clear........

I've had a few moments over 38 years of winter commutes ... in fact one year thinking about it I did use the .... <cough> reliant regal .... and the following spring riding my Z1R scared the pants out of me!
Since then I've always had a winter bike and had the occasional tumble but mostly if you're going steady it's ok. Being in a car in snow scares and frustrates me to be honest, scares cos if it goes wrong you can't just step off it like you can with the bike, and frustrates cos once the car gets stuck there's little you can do whereas with the bike I find walking alongside it giving a helpful push while it's in gear usually frees it up
OK so it's cold .... again .... get off n push for 5 mins usually warms up ... but decent kit and I've not had a prob. My biggest worry is the tossers in cars who sit up my chuff cos I'm travelling at 20mph when they want to do the same 40mph they do come rain, shine, snow.
It does scare me that if I took a tumble they're too close to avoid me.
A mate of mine recently advised that if someones crowding you in this way simply stand up on the pegs, it confuses them and they back off. I tried it and it works

Not scare mongering but my brother inlaw had a bump on his triumph in the 2010 snow about three weeks before christmas, christmas eve in the pub he went to the bar ordered his pint and went blind in his right eye [as quick as that no warning nothing] it turned out to be a clot of some sort had settled behind his eye leaving him blind in that eye, then mayday bank holiday he was reading the paper at home the other eye went the same way, nothing anyone can do he has lost his sight for good,
was this brought on by comming off the bike i don't know but it has made me think twice about riding in the snow.

What happens when you lose traction on a hill and can't get off the bike or walk because it's too slipperyslparry wrote:lol ...

In my police days there was an offence of "Driving without due consideration for other road users" I think riding a motorcycle in the snow fits this offence.

hats off to you Steve - I've got a pic of me just ready to set off outside my house in NCB waterproofs on my old 250 Superdream (read nightmare). First test I passed was for the bike and I rode it everywhere. I probably would today if I didn't have the stress of driving a huge truck and putting up with the anchors on the road
