Well, having the things stuffed in my face whenever and without even asking, I have yet to see a single thing on a mac that doesn't work just as well and just as fast on a regular PC.

And as I built my own computers to my own specifications, I get a lot more computer for the same money than any mac or wintel pc. And because I do (and being picky about the components I chose), I also have as much problems (=none) as are said for Apple.

Comparison: The closest thing to my PC configuration is a MacPro. The cheapest listed on the dutch site is 2499 euro. The closest MacPro configuration lists as 3876 euros. And that's without screen.

My PC cost me about 1500 euros, and it does everything I need it to do.

Not much of a choice for me.

Jivebiker..... I now have vmfusionware (trial version) it looks great..... I have also seen various OEM versions of MS software from about £45 to £65 depending on etc etc..... What would you recommend basic vista home edition (enough to run most things I need) or XP, older but perhaps more safe... do you have a view

Or anyone else for that matter??/

Cheers

XP - less demand on hardware (or vm), but less secure.
Vista - more demand on hardware (or vm), more secure.

I have XP home. God enough for anything I need to do.

As to security, as it is in a virtual machine, you can Isolate it from the network an in various ways.

It could only become compromised if you used windows browsers or e-mail progs or similar to have direct access to the internet.

I run mine in a setting that locks it out of the internet, but allows it to communicate with my host Mac. If ned to download anything for the XP machine, I download with Safari in Mac OSX, then drag into windows once I am sure it is safe. This allows me to take a look at any downloaded files in the OSX finder, and see if there are any disguised .exe files for example.

If you were to go with Vista you would have to have the Premium version (or whatever its called) as the lesser ones are not licensed for running in virtual machines for some reason. I wouldnt bother, from what I hear Vista sucks.

So far it is running fabulously.

I would add that I would still favour OSX variants of available software, over windows variants. I only have windows for some things that do not work at all with OSX due to vendor support (or lack of).

I have now added Suse Linux 10.3 as a virtual machine to have a play, and also an Ubuntu Linux 7.10 for comparison to Suse.

Crikey, Linux has come a long way in recent years!

You heard wrong. Vista is the best Windows to date and it is more intuitive than XP. The people that complain about Vista (and XP 5 years ago) are the ones with crappy cheapass hardware from manufacturers that don't support Vista or are unable to write decent drivers. They blame Microsoft for other companies fucking up. That's one thing you Apple guys never have any issues. Of course if PC users would buy good stuff instead of cheap stuff, they wouldn't either.

And there are those guys that complain about Vista sucking up resources. These guys don't have a clue about what it does and how it works. They blame Microsoft for their unwillingness to read up on the subject and try to understand what it is trying to do (and quite successfully).

And no, I ain't no Microsoft fanboy. I am more of a Linux guy myself. However, I do run Windows as I have certain software I cannot live without which only runs on Windows for now.

Thanks for your views boys..... I will go with XP I think.... Its solid and good enough for the programs I need.

Throttlemeister.... I like your galleries, however your tabs to get to them come up with too much code and therefore my browser cannot get to them without cutting out some of the line....(safari)

Thanks again chaps

Throttlemeister, you are right about hardware.

It scares me to see hardware for sale with 512MB of RAM and Vista installed. How cheap can you get.

Given how cheap memory is these days I cannot see how anyone can justify anything under 1.5GB. The poor hard drives must run themselves into the ground.

I haven't used Vista much myself ( I have had a play in PC world, but it hung the laptop it was on, when I plugged my USB memory stick in it).

A friend at work is my main source of info for all things Windows, and he is a bit of a guru (writes his own software and all that). He has given up with Vista after continual compatibility issues with his vast collection of assorted hardware devices. Some of this is not that old, and some very expensive (pro grade HD video cards etc). In time these things will improve, as drivers get updated, just as things were when Macs went from OS9 to OS X.

Personally, I want Vista to be brilliant. That way the world wont switch to Macs, and the virus writers will leave us alone. There are advantages to being an insignificant minority.

Jivebiker..... Now got fusion proper £42 with 20% discount at the moment, and a OEM version of XP Home..... loaded up a treat and is very fast... much faster than the old Virtual PC6.

Mapsource and comms all working well.... but I am worried about the vulnerability of Windows and viruses???!!!.

Thanks for all your help on here.... My sense of direction is nill. So I can now use the quest as it should be. For those that feel a natural sense of direction is best.... well I have none. I took my lad out one day (he was 5 at the time) and we came out from shopping, and i could not remember where the car was.... he took me right there!!!!..... he got that from his mum.

Cheers

snavetrauts...

set the network on fusion to talk to Host-only. Then you should not inadvertantly catch any viruses.

All downloads can be done with safari in OSX then dragged into XP (as long as VMware tools are installed.

HINT.

If you have enough disk space, make fusion take a snapshop of XP as a backup. If you get a virus or something the revert to the snapshot.

I know what you mean about speed. I had Virtual PC, and even Windows 98 ran at a crawl. Fusion is an entirely different beast.
