Decatting an '04 BoxerCup - pros & cons. and how to do i

Post by masha »

I have heard that it is possible to remove the catalyst from my Boxer Cup.

Qs
- In others' experience is this worth doing?
- What parts would i need
- Who Makes them
- will the bike pass an MOT or will I have to keep fitting the cat. back on
- does the bike need re-chipping afterwards
- who can attend to this

Thanks
Matthew

Sounds like Bluemanc has already done it according to this thread

As far as I am aware, no bike needs a cat to pass an MOT, but the rest of the system would still need to be able to keep the noise within limits, which I believe is normally the case

That was useful thanks.

.....But what about suitable suppliers of Y-pipes, and re-mapping chips,

- will my standard '04 BoxerCup Laser cans slot straight onto it.

- If I stick with a standard air filter it sounds like I'll get away with just a Y-piece? How much should I expect to pay for one?

Without upsetting the single spark owners!!?

I'll mention the symptoms I experienced with my twin spark

The bike was de-catted when i bought it, still road legal for the MOT, the only concern is exhaust noise levels, mine had the Laser cans too, its very loud , even when compared to a mates Mille with a race can, an MOT pass is at the discretion of the examiner so find a deaf one

I fitted a K&N free-flow air filter to mine when i did the 12k service and found that I immediately developed a flat-spot in the mid-range, coupled by very white spark plugs!! she was running very lean.

I had two alternatives, a Laser Eprom Chip (£150 from the USA for the twin-spark) or go back to a conventional air filter, I have done the latter and she is running sweet as a nut, might pick up a chip on my hols in Florida in October if i don't change the bike before then

The single spark seems to have slightly different mapping as one patron on this site has the Y piece and K&N filter fitted with no lean running

hope this helps?

Thanks that's useful feedback also - I think I'll just try a Y-pipe on my standard Laser / standard filter setup then.

Who makes the Y-pipe and where can I mail-order one?

There are several manufactures of Y piece, Laser and Remus being the most common, any Motrax dealer can order you a Laser (in theory, as they are the distie for laser) or www.motorworks.co.uk for a Remus. I think the cost is soemwhere around £180.

anyone going to bid on this might want to check out if this is the race or road version to avoid trouble at MOT time.

masha,
fitted one on my 2004 BCR last year, bought it from motorworks, not a 5 min job to fit, bellypan off, rear light surround, siide panels, silencers might need a little persuasion. Fit the Y piece with some high temp silicon sealer on the push joints (recommended by motorworks), I didnt chip and whilst it didnt set the world on fire performance wise, the sound is incredible. It did also reduce the vibration through the bars, which was the main reason I fitted one after advice from this wonderful site :D

My BCR 04, fitted with vanderline pipe passed mot 2nd yr running, guess its down to who tests em. he seemed to take along time revving it up, guess he just enjoyed it! 2 weeks later i have just had the 24K service done, quized em on wether having fitted a lennies induct & K & N filter plus vanderline if the lamba probe could handle this amount of tinkering?
Was told, should do, but im leaning towards having it checked out on a dyno, then if needs be fitting a power commander. should help me sleep better at night after putting a K & N filter on my RD400E without changing the jets many moons ago, resulting in a holed piston on a jaunt to europe, LESSON LEARNT!

did mine over the last xmas hols, it had a K & N fitted already,as the bike only had 3000 miles on it everything came apart really easy.the y-pce & chip both came of flebay £145 for the pipe, £118 the chip (laser),as well as the noise i have noticed the gear changing seems to be some how slicker without any rev drop. (clutchless change up), if you do chip, you will need a set of security star torx keys. to open the motronix box, which is located under the tank,so you might aswell do the chip & filter together, and dont touch it with bare hands as they are sensative to static.
