Cornwall

I am planning a trip to Cornwall later this summer, probably August. Can any of you give me some must-see site and/or must-ride roads there? Not interested in modern entertainment, but I love combining great roads with the history and culture of the places I visit.

Cornwall + August = 1 car per square inch!

My parents live down on the Lizard in Cornwall and it's a beautiful place. Do you want roads to ride, or roads from which to view? I don't know of many to be honest. the road round the end from Lands end through St Just is lovely but like a lot of Cornish roads is tight and narrow with big stone walls on either side - follow it down into St Ives and wander round the little streets down there. It'll be flippin heaving in the summer though.

Think August will be very busy whichever part you are staying in.

If you base yourself near to Plymouth rather than further down though there are some very good roads to play on. I Recently stayed in Looe and rode cross country through Liskeard, Launceston up to Bude (nice and twisty) and back along the A39 to Wadebridge (Very fast road), Bodmin and back to Looe. Great days ride. Also did the run across the moors to Princetown and Okehampton which was good too.

Sights to see.
Clovelly just above Bude on the coast. Be warned though it's a steep walk up and down in bike gear but well worth it.
Boscastle - there is a spectacular blow hole in the cliff just outside the harbour.

Cornwall still one of the most stunning places you will ever find

I live in the southwest and definitely reccomend you put off your trip until the kids are back at school, as for places too see it depends on what you want ,even some of the more "developed" places can be ok a little bit out of season.

If you go to eat at a certain fish restaurant in Padstow, remember to take a taxi and not to park your bike outside it!

cornish peoples liberation army or similar has had a go at a couple of celebrity chefs who have eateries in cornwall and threatened to attack customers cars etc.Bit like the welsh burning holiday homes a few years back.

Just saw your post. I visited Cornwall in late March/April (the week before bank holiday) on the bike from Aberdeen. It was a good time to go as from bank holiday onwards through summer is pretty much heaving with cars and people etc. Truro is a brilliant city with a large Cathedral and its the only City I have been to in the Uk which does'nt have a bloody great shopping centre. St Ives, Padstow and Looe are all great but a bit commercial and like Jason say's will all be heaving in Summer. Torquay is also an extremely nice place to spend some time in. and for a really weird and facinating place to visit you could try Clovelly in Devon. It's the weirdest village I've ever been to. Check it out on the internet.

If you intend travelling along the south coast to get to Cornwall you simply must pop into see the Sammy Miller Motorcycle museum in the New Forest area. It's pure magic.

To be quite honest I would'nt go near Corwall in the high summer. Why don't you take a ferry from Zeebruge (spel?) to Rosyth near Edinburgh then head north to the Highlands for some decent biking roads.
