What Bends on an R1100S?

Post by POB »

I have been offered a late '98 orange 11S, that has had a skate down the road on the left-hand side.

As far as I can tell the cylinder head is oil-tight although the rocker cover has some road rash (it wore through the protectors the bike was wearing). The bike also needs a new bar end and the rear passener peg has broken... but that seems to be about it.

Would anyone be able to give me some advice on what gets mangled in the average 11S low-side (like out-of-true wheels, bent wishbones etc)? I have seen a few 11Ss in salvage yards and they always seem to have holed rocker covers, but this one doesn't look too bad. Mileage is 52k.

Any typical probs the bike will have at that mileage? It seems too late to have the dreaded plastiscine gearbox dogs of teh earlier 1100 series - post 96. From reading other posts I spose teh clutch might need doing...

Thanks guys. Advice on what to pay for a late 1998 with 52K, heated grips and luggage would be very handy. Will enable me to work out whether it's worth buying! It is a Cat D insurance job.

Ta.

Check the sub-frame mounting lugs where it bolts to the main frame - especially the top one which is out of sight. If that's snapped I'd walk away.

Thanks Gromit! Just checked and there is actually a small hole in the rocker cover, so I'm going to give it a miss. Not interested in bikes with potentially contaminated lubrication systesms, thanks a lot! Is also possible that the engine was starved of oil...

Thanks for the advice anyway!
