Travel Insurance

Am I the only one who didn't know that riding a motorcycle is excluded from the vast majority of travel insurance policies?
Were off to the Sachsenring next week so organised cover through the RAC as usual. Actually read the policy when it arrived this morning (obviously this is a first!) and was amazed that riding a moptorcycle over 125cc was excluded. Mr Angry managed to get a refund but only because it doesnt make the exclusion clear on the web site and I had booked it on line - usual policy is no refunds.
A bit of research has shown that the vast majority of policies exclude riding a motorcycle. My mates think they are covered because they have free travel insurance with banks and the like - but I bet they will be checking tonight.
Carol Nash are the shining example of how it should be done and offer a brilliant package.
One funny thing with RAC is they offer free breakdown cover for the UK leg of your journey - but only for motorcycles over 121cc. They really arent interested are they!!

This is becoming the norm with travel insurance. I have a group one with work and this year I had to pay £20 extra for each trip I take aboard.

Carole Nash are good on price for annual cover for the whole family, not had to claim yet tho' so can't comment on payout abilities.

I thought the Columbus Direct policy I've had for 2 years included riding bikes under their travel cover. I've just checked and......

"You will not be covered if you drive or ride on a motorcycle over 125cc whilst you are away."

So, absolutely useless. Good thing I didn't need to make a claim on any of my trips.

BMMenace, clearly you're not the only one who didn't know

I came here to learn about my new bike ('02 model - collecting it tomorrow

- had a few BM's before - several R80's, R100, couple of K100's, F650GS, R1100RS, R1150GS, R1200GS) and ended up learning this instead

I'm sure that the clause must refer to folk going on holiday and hiring a bike at one of the resorts to run around in their shorts and flipflops, but I'll need to check the policy that I used last year, for sure.

Just checked Sainsburys (who I used last year) and they exclude motorcycles of over 125 cc too - Ba5tards!

Anyone know of a decent insurer??

My wife and I have annual travel insurance, and I've never found a company that'll cover you for riding bikes, so I've always taken out a policy with Carol Nash, as previously stated, very good cover for a reasonable cost.

Picked-up a tip on the UKGSER site. Guy says try Marks & Spencer Travel Insurance; reasonably priced. I wasn't too clear if riding a bike was covered though, so I asked. Here's what they wrote:

"Thank you for your Marks and Spencer enquiry dated 02nd June 2006.

As long as you hold a full UK motorcycle licence and it covers the motorcycle you will be driving you will be fully covered under the Marks and Spencers policy except under the section Personal Liability. The luggage you carry in the hard panniers will be fully covered as long as you purchase the baggage cover.

I hope this answers your query satisfactorily, but should you have any further queries please contact us via telephone on 0800 068 3918.

Blimey how i smiled when i read that!! cuz i've been the same route many years ago with the AA and then the RAC and also ended up with Carol Nash

I think hte Direct Line policy covers you too and that's pretty cheap - I've got it through work but I have to pay a £300 excess if I claim. It's a dangerous game innit!

Tis true,RAC are fairly useless;they once left me stranded on the side of the A41 nr Tring for 5 hrs!!! I was eventually moved by the Police who weren't very happy about the situation.
I think it pays to be with someone who specialises in motorcycles rather than someone who has 95% dealings with cars.

Arranged M&S Travel Insurance for £79 per annum

Covers me worldwide (Inc USA), business cover, inc baggage, no excess.

You only know how good/bad it is when you claim, but it seems a good deal to me.

HSBC travel was Ok but when we had a claim for theft of goods it wasn't new for old. With CN now. Lost passorts this trip (Don't ask) and they are £51 each to renew. CN excess (Per PERSON Not claim) is £35 each!!!!!!!!!

I posted this thread a while back with travel insurance recommendations.

As I only go over once a year on the bike Citi bank is my preferred option as I can get cover for a trip for £2 per day.

The insurance you get free with Lloyds TSB definitely doesn't allow riding a motorcycle and you can't even add it as 'dangerous sport'.
