you may need to install a "driver" for the spIII if using the rs232 (serial ) port. check in device manager whilst the spIII unit is connected & switched on, if you have a yellow question or exclaimation mark, then the unit is not correctly configured (installed). if this is the case, the unit must have the driver installed before it can transmit data to /from the unit. the fact that your pc can see the unit via the usb port is irrelevant as serial port architecture is ancient tech by comparison.
having said that, I've never tried to use such a device via rs232, so I may be talking complete b****cks

When you click "Send to device" in MapSource, the drop-down list should show the SP3 as one of the options (and/or the datacard programmer if you have that plugged in too). If not, you need to make sure your serial port is enabled (should be listed in the Windows Control Panel), and your GPS is switched on at the time.
As far as I know, the only drivers supplied are for the USB programmer; the serial port should work without anything extra.
