Running lean

Post by oyster »

What I would like to know is, how is it with all the electronic wizardry this bike has, O2 sniffer, sensors et al, why does it run steadily lean? I have linked a gas analyser to the O2 sensor and it reads steadily lean. The needle wobbles appropriately when the bike is in use, but hovers well into the lean range all the time.
I have an ABS unit so the fuel regulator swap is not an easy option.
Perhaps ignorance is bliss.

because that's the way the map is programmed on the chip in the ECU.
Essentially the sniffer/o2 sensor only comes into play at low revs to stop the fuelling becoming too rich at idle to 2K revs. It's too much unburnt fuel that destroys the CAT.
There are 3 options:
Install a new chip
Install a K12 reg.
Get someone(like Jim @ Cray engineering)who is a bit good with the motronic to install a new potentiometer that makes the duration of the fuel injection bursts longer.

.

Or try removing the CAT Code Plug - it is the relay thing at the front of the left hand relay block.

My dyno runs earlier this year showed that the removal of this plug(relay) just made it run slightly richer throughout the rev range.

Mind you it was with the O2 sensor disconnected!

Cat code plug was never in place on this bike!
It could be that I have only been on low revs, I shall try a more determined effort when the rains dry out.
I have heard of Cray engineering before, - somewhere in Kent? Does anyone have details?
And as described, I have an ABS unit, the fuel regulator lives under it. That amounts to about a week of tapping angled brake pipe joints and vacuum bleeding to rebuild. Of all the stupid places to put a part..........
I am even thinking of a replacement silencer and matched chip, they would be easier than changing the regulator! Anyone got any recommendations? Systems that have really worked?

Cray engineering is in Sittingbourne.
Phone:01795 431444.
Ask to speak to Jim.He has raced an 11S.
I looked into a way of upping the power on the S and he said the only true way is to ditch the EFI and install a pair of Flatslides with Boyer ignition which would cost about 1K all in!
He has a few cheaper tricks up his sleeve, and is also a very very good engineer(does complete engine tune ups crank balancing, gas flowing, dual plugging etc etc).

Forgot to add that I ran the Arrow Ti system on my S for 100'00 miles.
It worked very well with the standard chip and o2 unplugged.

Mine always seemed to run better with the o2 sensor removed. Completely killed the hesitation/stutter that I sometimes experience on a steady throttle.

Where did we all get to on the connect/disconnect of the o2 sensor? FYI, I have laser/chip, lennies, SJ K&N, fat arse etc....

I only reconnected after the "holed piston" saga (can't remember who) of some 18 months ago.

I ran mine disconnected for over 100'000 miles with no noticable probs.
Plugs indicated a decent mix light grey/tan brown colour.

Bailey,

Was it chipped too? If so, which one.

My understanding is that the O2 sensor only works when there is a combination of low revs AND low throttle openings. It is there for emissions as well as to protect the CAT.

I also think that it only weakens the mixture - it never richens it!!

Many posts around the place also indicate that disconnecting it also improves the rideability. Mind you I think that that is a problem that afflicts the 1150RT more than the S.

My deduction is that disconnecting it cannot harm the bike (providing there is no CAT in place)and will almost certainly improve it.

There is no doubt that the 1200GS (same part no as the K1200RS)pressure regulator is the way to go. It even seems to make the standard bike a bit smoother.

Lean running was a concern of mine, but I think it is now solved!

Laser road system (baffles removed)
Laser chip
K&N Filter
Excess weld removed from both ends of the headers
1200GS pressure regulator
O2 Sensor disconnected
Extra holes in the snorkel tube for use on the road
Snorkel tube holes closed for track days
'Super' petrol
