A Solway Jaunt

Postby Blackal » Wed Sep 16, 2020 5:00 pm

Went for a wee jaunt yesterday with Chris (Boxerscott).

Met up at Selkirk and headed down St Mary's loch to Moffat.

285 miles

Some cracking roads.

Stayed overnight at Hazel Bank Guest House in Moffat - A fantastic place to stay! Ruth Watson, the owner is a great host, and the accommodation is immaculate! Breakfast was great too. (I had the full breakfast - it seemed rude not to............... )

Anyway - here is yesterday's route - a not-too-shabby 285 miles. :D

(apparently - when you look out to sea at Port William...... You can see Ireland! [smilie=sofa.gif] )

Looked a good days ride, make the most of it, that’s part of the “new” south west coastal 300 route, next year it will be full of campervans and scrotes crapping in lay-bys :D

Al/Chris

There is a cracker of a route as an alternative -over that way if you take the A714 North from Newton Stewart to Bargrennan then take the right fork onto the unclassified road signposted for Glentool and the next 20 miles are glorious by the way, then pick up the B7045 and join the A77 just before Minishant  One to keep in your 'back pocket' incase you need it.

I’m afraid the SWC300 is already the subject of articles praising it as a quieter version of the NC500 in the leisure sector magazines and websites. We are driving up to Oban today for a weeks sailing around Skye and a week in the van so might have to have a trundle round it. :D

Took a look at that road on Google-streetview. Looks good surface, but with it being effectively single track, I'd be constantly wary of a build up of loose shit in the centreline, in places. :?

( I don't like mid-bend gravel............. )

Thanks John, Will keep that in mind. I have 3 routes up my sleeve weather and road conditions will determine what will be. October.. colder surface temperatures, scree, leaves, will all be factored in for the best of a back end meet. Amanda are up in the area holidaying the week before so things will be prepared as well as anyone could reasonably expect.
