brake rattle & squeak... fixed, I think

Post by fatroy »

I've managed to (hopefully) put and end to the brake rattle I had coming from the front of my R1100s.
On both sides, the pads had zero copper slip :(
one of the locating pins between the inner and outer pad was solid and needed real force to knock it out - it didn't have it's little retaining clip in either  also, see pic - it was not in a good state.

Anyway, new pins from BMW, new bobbins and wavy washers from Motorworks, and new stainless disc bolts from the internet, and it seems squeak and rattle-free!!!

UPDATE>>>

It still rattles

pretty sure it's the pads - npping one with pliers and moving it backwards and forwards i reckon its THE sound.
I'm looking carefully at pics of different ones and notice some have springy things by the pin hole...

any one have springs on their Brembos or care to chip in with a pic of yr caliper??

Cheers

Afaik only the OE pads have that spring , so I guess either live with it or fit OE pads . I have different retro fitted 2 pin brembo calipers on my bike ( without an anti rattle plate and they rattle nicely ! I have a similar caliper on the front of my Guzzi which has an anti rattle plate fitted but it still makes some weird noises.

Have a look at the parts list on this site and you'll see the spring fitted to the pad. Edit , looking at the original photo at the start of this thread , that spring appears to be fitted ?

thanks for the reply!

yeah, i was thinking about looking at OE pads...

What you see in my first pix is not really a spring, it's an L shaped locking clip thing that can rotate slightly with the locator pin (11).

Looking further on the internet, it seems pads like the ones below have some sort of spring around their locator hole...

I think I need to have another chat with Motorworks :)

... stainless disc bolts from the internet ...
I would steer clear of these (unless absolutely sure).. the previous owner had put some in and while they looked alright it was PITA getting them out.. like cheese and even with heat just stripped... I got a Dremel onto them to square the heads off then heat + mole-grips.
Standard blots for me..

Ah, cheers for the pointer with these!
they do seem fine and better quality than what was already holding the disc on - they were more cheese-like and I was V worried removing them, so they went straight in the bin.
These replacements have been undone/removed on one side the other day when I thought I'd try rotating the disc one bolt hole to see if it'd stop the rattle - solid heads, came out easy, went back in easy, torqued-up easy and no worries re their cheesyness!
