Any Type II Diabetics out there?

Hello,

I know this affects a lot of us in mid life and I have been dealing with it since I was around 40.

I have found though over the last couple of years that my ability to control it once I moved to Insulin was becoming harder and harder and eventually it was controlling me.

Things like riding my R1200S has become increasingly difficult (But none the less enjoyable) so I have taken drastic steps to get control back.

I have just had a Gastric Bypass performed - For those who are interested in the details then I have written a Blog:

I am now at home recovering - Not allowed to ride or drive for 4 weeks so I suspect I will have the cleanest R1200S in the land by the time I can get on it again.

Early signs are positive with my sugar levels just a bit above normal and I am not taking any of the multiple tablet and injection cocktails that I was.

I am not going to preach but for any of you that are Diabetic and er.. on the larger side all I will say is weight is key - Get it under control and you hopefully won't have to take such drastic action as I have.

Little bit of an update on this thread....

18 weeks on fromn the operation my Diabetes Type II is in remission. I am down from 10 tablets & 3 injections a day to nothing apart from vitamin supplements. Add to that the loss of 81lbs/5st 11lbs or around 37kgs if you prefer in weight and my overall health seems to be improving day by day. Blood pressure and Cholesterol all at normal levels.

I expect to lose around another 2st over the course of the next 8 months with hopefully the weight loss stablisiing a year on from surgery. I have a personal target weight of 13st 8lbs which will give me a BMI of 25 which is believe it or not is the top end of "healthy". This from a starting point of 21st 4lbs and a BMI of 38.

An extreme decision but seems at the moment to be worthwhile...

....My eating habits have changed beyond recognition. 3 meals (Size of a ramekin dish) and 3 snacks per day (A snack will be something like a dairylea triangle or similar). I don't feel hungry nor do I crave food. Some issues with eating still now as my "stomach" is now around 20ml in size so it is easy to overdo it if you are not careful.

Downside is I am having to buy loads of new clothes (Down from a 42" waist to 34" for example) so not much money to spend on the R1200S or the Subaru

Having lost 37kg I suspect the R1200S is relieved as well

Faced with a similar situation - I think I would also have to go for something like a gastric band - desperate measures and all that.

But-it sounds like you are back in charge of your "new" life - but with continued support from your family - things must look a lot better now?

I'd like to help you out with some good-condition 34" clothes, but my gear might be too trendy for you.........
