R1100S gearbox oil drain hex key size

what size is this hex key and is it in fact a hex key? on the R1100S gearbox drain.

14mm hex. There is very limited space below the plug so a standard type Allen key or socket will not fit.

Best to cut a 1 inch piece of hex key and use a 14mm spanner.

yes I spotted those but best bet is a hex key (ideally a ball end one for zipping it up at a bit of an angle due to exhaust). I see why BMW list a tool to get to this. Even a hex key could be tight against the exhaust - might need to cut it down a bit with the grinder for a good fit. I'll see what I can get locally, as its the last thing I need to finish a full service on the Boxercup at home this weekend with a service kit from Motoworks.

Have a bit of cardboard or plastic bottle that has been cut to fit there because you don't want the mess all over the exhaust.

No, no, no! A standard Allen key will not fit. You may get a ball head Allen key in there ...maybe. A socket on a ratchet will not fit.

Buy a 14mm Allen key and cut 1 inch off it, then use a 14mm spanner on the Allen key insert. Simplies :D

That was my plan - grind down a standard 14mm allen to make a custom tool and maybe weld an extension on it for a bit of leverage. A ball end 14mm Allen would also be handy to get it started when threading the bolt back in.

The service kit I bought didn't come with any replacement washers for the gear box drain and fill bolts - is it okay generally to re-use the exiting?

I gaffer taped an inch of Allen key to a 14mm ring spanner. Worked perfectly.
R1200GS TC. Triple Black
R1200S. It’s gone. Had it 11yrs. My favourite bike in 42yrs riding.

Thanks I got a small hex socket set and can just about get the 14mm socket in the bolt and will try turning it with a spanner on the hex late (as not much chance of getting the ratchet on the bottom, without removing the exhaust again).

And my drain plug also doesn't have a washer.

Inch off a hex key, gaffer and ring spanner -every time.
Recently added a metal hook to cut-down plastic drain bottle, that clips over the exhaust pipe...now oil changes are less messy.

I know it has a magnet, but do you believe the weight of that drain plug??

Yes thanks - did the oil change last night - (new hex socket with a spanner on it and an extension on the spanner for leverage) no. washer on mine either. yes its heavy and yet the magnet had some material to remove.

However...... all back together and with de-cat relay jumper in place (that I had never done previously after taking the cat off) and K&N air filter fitted - it appears very hard to start the bike (even with the 'fast-idle' choke). Its okay once its warm, but there is now a flat spot from idle upto about 5,000rpm where it goes like a rocket again.

I guess I'll try a standard air filter again, and might even go back to fitting the catalyst and start from scratch until its running smoothly again, from standard and go from there.
