Final drive service

Finally got around to servicing the final,drive. The spline greasing is easy. The oil change is more awkward as BMW in their infinite wisdom decided that it should be a 'lifetime' (100k kilometer) oil and therefor didn't design in a hole for oil ingress. I used a 60mm syringe with a 20mm long rubber tube on the end and carefully squeezed a few ml in at a time through the speedo drive hole as anything more over spills back out again. However even going really slowly it still spills out. Whilst the down pipes were off I took the opportunity to polish them up at the same time. Next job is painting the engine cover. I didn't do it this time as it was too cold for painting.

It looks precarious but was actually fine until I took the back wheel off and then it was a bit wobbly but ok to work with

It should be done. BMW now state it in the service schedule. TBH the oil didn't look bad but I'm at 16k miles and the splines were bone dry. If I still have the bike I would definitely do them again in another 10k or so.

I did it twice on my old 1100S and it's a doddle as it's designed as a serviceable item with a dedicated ingress hole on the top so one doesn't have to drop the FD. Doing the 1200 is a lot messier.

Nice job Steve, I've just done mine, I bought an ABBA stand so that I could get the bike off the ground (they're not sooo expensive) and like you I refilled using a syringe. the speed sensor hole was a bit of a faff to get the oil back in, I warmed the bottle of oil on a radiator before, it was nice and easy to get back in then.

the gearbox oil was changed at the same time... tip, don't leave the oil in the drain pan for a week (I was away for work forgot to empty it) co's when you come back your workshop is gonna smell like cat pee!

Pipes look nice, will you sort out the corrosion on the engine now? there was a thread somewhere recently.

Yes. Engine is next. I would have done it at the same time but I thought it was a bit too cold for painting. I'll do it at the end of next month. I've left the pipes off. I changed the gearbox and engine oil a 1000 miles ago so i'm OK for a while. I generally change the oil at the end of the season so it has fresh in it whilst it's sat still for 7 months. I wouldn't mind an abba stand but I already have the paddock stand and I don't want to get rid of the big red jack even though it doesn't really work with the 1200.(It was ideal for the 1100s though). Consequently I don't have the space for an abba stand as well

I've got the same paddock stand for my recently acquired 12 but I think the boxer design stand will work as well and it's much more stable plus it fits on my bike ramp. Was thinking of selling the boxer design stand and looked on Motorworks site to see what they cost - shocked at £160 ish!!

Yes, I used the drill with this. For the finish I used Autosol rather than the lime powder supplied.

Although my polished pipes looked good for 2 or 3 weeks, disappointingly they soon turned brown, so now they need doing again

Nice post, I admire your acceptance of the shite paint system bmw employ to protect (cough) the engine casings. IMHO anyone who bleats on about bmw build quality needs to extract their head from their no no place.

Salt does not help but it needs to find and ingress point and a good paint system should resist that. BMW paint system is crap and applied on to inferior alloy front cover. BMW build quality? do not make me laugh.

You have to love these bikes cos you are nowt but a feckin slave to them!!

This is the finished job. Turned out ok. Sandy did 3 coats of acid etch but i went with 4, then 3 coats of PJ1 satin black.

I am going to have to do mine soon. I have patched it up with a brush on product. It looks good for now, but it's not going to last long.
