Can anyone tell me if a seller had cancelled a bid I had made for an item, would I get a notification that he had cancelled it?
I ask because i made a bid for a bike on behalf of a mate, he had seen the bike and was happy with it, but the owner wanted the auction to run to the end, I duly popped in the bid with a minute to go, got the "you are the highest bidder" notice and then I watched as the auction ended at a lower price than my bid with a different bidder and there is no sign of my bid in my ebay, nor any emails from ebay

All a bit strange eh?

There is an option for the seller at the end of the auction to offer the item to another bidder. But this takes a few mins to arrange and the highest bidder offer to be cancelled.
This could of happened if the other bidder was schill bidding to raise the price and the seller wasn't happy with the price you offered. But the seller would f had to contact ebay and claim the buyer now didn't want the bike and you would/should of got an notification unless the seller claimed you couldn't be reached.

The other thing is that if you have a low 'feedback' rating, he could've set the ad to only accept bids from high feedback bidders. This is a guess, as I've never witnessed it in action.

My feedback is 100% and in the 90+ , but the plot thickens, I think the seller was shil bidding it up ( he had stated he needed £4100 min) I bid £4k and was highest bidder for 30 seconds and then my bid just dissapeared with the auction ending at £3933, I think he cancelled my bid so as not to lose the bike, the winning bidder had bid it up all the way bar one other bidder. My mate who I was bidding on behalf of has now had an email from the seller stating that his "buyer hasn't contacted him and would he still be interested"

That sounds like a fair interpretation. I suspect that his pal bid up to the one before your £4k, and then he has gone into some correspondence with his pal where he says something like "Hi - I've just noticed that the rear wheel is buckled. I will need to get this renewed - do you still want the bike, or do you agree to cancel the purchase?"

Matey replies "I don't want the bike now" - any fees are cancelled, and he contacts your pal to see what he can negotiate on the bike.

Yeah, I think thats what happened, but can he cancel my bid without me getting some form of notification? seems odd that it just plain dissapeared

It sounds like he can cancel without you getting any automated notification.

I have had similar-ish, whereby I was the top bidder, and the listing disappeared completely - before the end of auction. The guy decided that he wasn't going to let it go for whatever sum....... and simply removed it.

I suspect in my case - the seller wasn't shilling the bids.

You cant make any changes to a listing in the last 12 hours... only cancel the auction
