Rear brake caliper-advice wanted

Can anyone confirm which way the rear caliper pad backing spring plate(whatever it is called) fits? [2003, ABS] There is an arrow embossed on it, does it go to to the front or rear of the bike when fitted. It fell out when I was cleaning up the brakes

According to the 1999-2003 Service Manual I got from ebay - I quote:

The installed position must be correct (arrow pointing in forward-travel direction).
