How do I get the plastic cover off

Post by Lightrunner »

Cleaned my bike for the first time over the weekend which was more a labour of love than anything else.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it's been dropped on the left hand side as the heel plate on the left hand side is bent so that it's not parallel to the frame but bends in under the frame slightly, there are also a couple of thin marks on the frame in the same area - nothing serious though.

In the same area there's a large plastic cover that has some electronics underneath it (no idea what) The cover nearly came off and I was going to take it off to clean it but it wouldn't come all the way... is there a trick to getting it off... is there a wire going through it that I would have needed to unplug? What is that under the cover?

I'm not desperate to pull my bike apart but I'd like to know it better than I knew my previous bikes and over time I'd like to start doing more and more of the routine service jobs.

cheers
Andy

That cover is the plastic cover for the starter motor.
As far as I can see it can be pulled out unless you have the later models wheich have a plug for accessories or for recharging or something similar.
Never been game to pull it off.

There is also a hidden hex bolt hidden round the back.

To remove - insert hex socket into bolt by hand THEN attach ratchet.

I thought that then looked at another bike - I think they're like that as standard.

They all do that sir.
You really need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape. If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use the tape.

I think it's an m5, and it's a bit of a bastard. Best get yourself a set of ball head hex sockets!

Cheers all for the replies.... good to know that the bend is artistic rather than damage.

I can't see me getting anything I currently own in there to get a bolt out but good to know that's what it is. Good reason to expand my tool collection though
