MickB was the only one in the car park and we introduced ourselves and ‘hit it off’ straight away, similar age and like minded with regards to bikes and, speed and general biking stuff Image


Everyone else arrived pretty soon after that with Chris the last to arrive.

Once Chris & Paul had decided who was to be my morning ‘Rear Gunner’ and who in the afternoon, we set off on damp roads. Out the car park and West initially, away from Moffat centre and keeping on the A701 heading South alongside the A74(M). Now in my defence m’lord of the morning roads I took the group on, it was a hastily put together route as explained in my last post ((Overuled Image) and only put into my sat nav that very morning. Apologies to all because it wasn’t my usual standard of route as Chris very kindly pointed out later that morning Image

Anyhow, I won’t bore you with the mundane roads up to our first stop after an hours riding and then to our lunch stop, suffice to say that they were BOR-RING. We stopped in Longtown (which Chris reckoned was a ‘ruff as Cowboy Town’ and nicknamed it ‘Dodge City’ but seemed fine to me, for a coffee, parking on the high street

We found a cafe and some sat inside for a second breakfast, I think Image and some of us stood outside because it was now dry and we’re sat enough on the bikes and felt good to stretch our old legs. As we were stood outside the cafe, all hell broke loose on the High Street. Cop cars & vans flying everywhere, on a Saturday morning and I thought Image Mmm, maybe Chris was right about Longtown Image Anyhow, it didn’t impact on our ‘council’ coffee Image and we were soon rallied and on our way.

The Sat Nav - honest - took us onto the A69 heading East and after a few miles I’d had enough and took the very next exit out of some roadworks the local council had very kindly started previously. Ignoring my Garmin I pointed the ‘ViPeR’ East down what I thought was a crackin little narrow side road, corners covered in farm shit and gravel and woke me up immediately Image

We reached the A68 and I headed South, then back onto the A69 - just don’t ask Image and after loosing Paul along with Gawaine & Jenny, ‘not my fault your Grace’ through a wrong turn, we were soon all reunited only for Gawaines R1100s to not ‘fire up’. By his own admission, the battery was dodgy before coming to Moffat and he had left the ignition & lights on as they pondered what to do and where to go at the side of the road. No matter, With Chris as ‘pilot’ we pushed him 3 miles along the road - felt like three miles anyway Image and She burst into life Image

Back along the A69 and up the A68 and past the junction we came out of a little earlier Image I don’t think anyone noticed if I’m honest Image the roads were still dry and we even saw the sun popping it’s nose out which was very welcome Image️ This section of the A69, although not the best, was still a welcome change from the shite we’d been on and after an initial game of follow the line of camper and cars, we were soon making ‘good progress’ North to our lunch destination. At one point, when we were following the car ‘caravan’ at a leisurely pace, a GS came from, out of space I think, ‘off like the clappers’ past us all, on solid whites and, well, ‘fooked off’. In my helmet I thought, Jesus, that’s not like Paul, he must be really passed off worth he route and roads so far or, he was firing ahead to get to a photo opportunity position and film us all riding along, that must be it I said to myself. We arrived at Otterburn Mill for lunch, still dry and were greeted by an immaculate Peugeot 205 which I duly photo’d and had a quick chat with the owner who was only too happy to tell me about his car Image Image

Lunch, which was and always is superb, home cooking at its absolute best, was despatched, plenty of chat and banter was had and as we were getting onto our bikes, the rain started spitting on, and it came, and came, and just got worse as the afternoon progressed, but that didn’t bother us hardened, long in the tooth UK Bikers Image
