R1200S Starter motor replacement

Postby radiohead9999 » Tue Feb 23, 2021 11:33 am

Hi all,

I'm trying to source a replacement for my '07 R12S, I can't see any ident on the starter motor and even Google is useless! Could anyone please advise which unit I need? I have seen various posts on other sites saying I can use a unit from a GS or an R12R, but I wanted to confirm if this was correct and if it is is there a range of years I need to look for?

Thanks

Steve

Quick search of Fleabay brings up a unit from a 2008 showing it as a 715EP44 £89 second hand or £200 for a new one. Worth trying MotorWorks

eBay item no. 302952695190 cross-references against RealOEM's 12317691956, which is a Bosch unit for the 1200S. The eBay one is a rebuilt Valeo and is actually a bit bigger than the Bosch - I fitted one to my RT and there was a noticeable improvement in cranking speed, presumably why BMW moved from the Bosch. I wonder if they kept the Bosch for the S because it's lighter? Anyway, the seller on eBay is saying it fits the S - I had to pop the gearchange linkage apart when I fitted mine to give a bit more wiggle room, but it was still only a 15 minute job. :)

According to Motorworks only the Bosch fits the 12s

Hmmmmm......perhaps an S-related clearance issue then? The Valeo is shown on Motorworks as not being interchangeable with the Bosch, but it is, at least on the RT. Worth speaking to the eBay seller I reckon, I found them very helpful.

Interesting Pete, I spose the only way to find out would be to get the Valeo and see if it fits the 12s, Motorworks price is the same for both exchange units

Thanks for all of the advice, guys. I saw the Ebay unit, but it looked a bit tired, I did read that some people had fitted an RT unit on an S, I thought there would be more info on the web, but there wasn't. I have found an Arrowhead SVA0005 unit from the US that fits an R1200S 2006, mine is on a 2007 plate, but I didn't think there was difference. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Arrowhead-SV ... 2288484122 Any thoughts?

Why not try the one on eBay I mentioned? The seller was adamant it would fit my RT, even though Motorworks were adamant a Valeo wouldn't go where a Bosch had been! The seller's OE part numbers list includes the 1200S one.

You should be able to find the dimensions of the 1200S Arrowhead one somewhere - cross reference against a Valeo one and you'll have your answer.

Well, the new unit arrived and it was about 5 cm longer, but it fitted okay. The job was as straightforward as other members suggested it would be :-) Just charging the battery ready for lift off tomorrow, hopefully. Thanks again for everyone's help and advice :D

I went to run the bike this morning it's turning over much better and firing, but it's still not starting, I will have to check to see if I have a bad connection! All good fun!
