Problem head cilinder r1200s
Hi, my name is Carlos and I'm from Spain. I'm after some advice on my r1200s.
It has had a pretty bad accident which destroyed the right side cylinder heads, which are beyond repairable and need replacing.
I'm after some used cylinder heads but I'm struggling to find the specific one for this model, so I thought about using ones from either R1200gs or r1200rt. However it's my understanding that they are not 100% compatible and would need adapting.
Does anyone know which adaptations would those be and if it feasible to do so?
Or if, by any chance, do any of you have ones for sale?

I don't think Motorworks have much stock for the 12S. Always worth trying though. I needed a camshaft supporting bracket and they took a couple of days searching and I had to buy new. Guess that's the price of exclusivity (or low sales)

You could also keep watching on the free ads site in Germany. I've just checked and they have nothing for sale but there are normally quite a few R1200s bits for sale. Site address https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de.
If you are really desperate there is a complete engine for sale for 2,500 Euros. Bit of a sledge hammer to crack a nut tho.

Good Luck

Re: Problem head cilinder r1200s
Thanks
I have been offered the cylinder heads from another model (gs/rt) as I have been told they are sort of compatible, even though it seems that the process is quite painful and not straightforward at all...
Enlarge intake and adapt cams

Re: Problem head cilinder r1200s
Also the diameter of the exhaust port is bigger on the 1200s the exhausts gaskets are not interchangeable as I found out ...

Re: Problem head cilinder r1200s
A donor engine is not a bad idea to consider. The bikes are scarce relatively speaking. It depends on how attached one is to the bike. Obviously not an insurance job as I guess the biff it took would render it a "write off". One could consider cost of repair v value of the spares if bike is broken down. Not an inexpensive fix which everway it is considered.MickB wrote:You could also keep watching on the free ads site in Germany. Re: Problem head cilinder r1200s
I have already bought a cylinder head of r1200rt, I have been informing myself and I think I will be able to adapt it, extending the intake entrance and the exhaust exit, and assembling my camshafts of r1200s (I hope they can be mounted). The valves are the same in r1200rt and r1200s.
