Battery for early R1100S

Postby conkerman » Wed Dec 11, 2019 1:05 pm

Hello again. I hope you are all wonderful.

Trying to resurrect my old R1100S. I pulled the tank off and it looks like the previous owner had jammed in a 896 Lawnmower battery. after judicious hammertime of the battery tray. I ordered a similar replacement (Very Very Cheap) but it is frighteningly close to the bottom of the fuel tank.

Bike Starts and runs OK, But I suspect my input shaft Is on its way out. (rattly noise).

What is the correct battery for this bike? Motobatt 51814?

I need to decide whether to save or break it, as it has a set of remus pipes.

Cheers
Gary

If the 896 is doing the job I'd just cover it ( the terminals ) with a piece of old inner tube to insulate it.... Other than that does your bike have Abs ? If so you'll need a 19 or 20A/h battery.
I've used a locally purchased Platinum ctm19lbs AGM battery which I laid on its side after modifying the battery box , (Abs removed)

I think I tried something similar to a 51814 a while back but it didn't turn over the engine very well ... I've since replaced the starter motor so maybe that was the problem?

Thank you.

I'll line everything up tomorrow. The bike has been sitting for 4 1/2 years so I need to bleed the brakes and do a bunch of other stuff before I take for MOT/ decide whether to part it out.

It's a non ABS model.

Bought the exide battery in the end. Bike is back together.

Thanks for the input.
