Wc alternators

Postby Mitch1100 » Wed Aug 21, 2019 1:58 am

Replaced the alternator belt on my R1200s, and the technician was telling me they've had a few Police late model water cooled BMWs where the alternators have failed...around a5k repair! It's actually mounted inside the engine casing between the crankcase and the gearbox and is a $1,500 part plus labor as engine has to be removed and split

Alternator sits on top of the crankcases at the front of the engine on the 12S, not inside as the technician stated. Four bolts to remove once you have removed the drive belt behind the front cover.

No, technician was talking about late model water-cooled boxers...my bad  The only pain in the butt is the final drive oil change on the 12s :?

Water cooled? Where is the swear filter? :)
Is that the final drive oil that never needs changing for the life of the bike? Who on earth thought that was a good idea and signed off on it? Answers on a postcard to the usual address please ...

it's still relatively easy to drain and refill just put 180 ml in not 200 or you'll blow the oil seal
There would appear to be a surfeit of prolixity and sesquipedalian content today please do not use a big word when a singularly un-loquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity
