Got the diagnosis on Brünhilde this morning: All the symptoms were of a trashed driveshaft/UJs - which is of course a *horribly* pricey job. I was getting serious clonking in the drive train and it just wasn't running right; however - for once - I seem to have rescued victory from the jaws of defeat: It turns out to have been a burned-out coil stick and out-of-balance throttle bodies; this conspired to make one cylinder miss a beat, stumble and catch up, giving the transmission a real kick in the process and making it bonk like an obsessed rabbit in springtime. Not cheap to fix with new parts - but a very small fraction of what I *thought* I'd let myself in for. The only trouble now is that, although I should be out enjoying the glorious weather and getting my knee down, I'm scheduled to start clearing out the bloody office upstairs and cart even more loads of rubbish down to the tip. Never mind; delayed gratification can be extremely cathartic...

Just back from my first decent run since the repair: Jeez, it's completely *transformed* the R1100S. I guess over time you just compensate for iffy running and don't notice a gradual decline, but the difference is astonishing - particularly in stop/go town traffic which had become a clutch-lever-back-to-the-bar-and-coast-when-you-can-while-keeping-the-revs-up operation. It'll take a while to wipe the smile off my face...
