WHALING DAYS

Postby Blackal » Tue Oct 28, 2014 4:18 pm

Whaling days – in the South Atlantic 1950-1953

Not the best photos in absolute quality terms, but my father was a keen photographer who paid £100 for a Contax rangefinder camera (with removable lens for use in an enlarger) – back in the late ‘40s. (I believe his pay for a 9-month contract in the South Atlantic – grossed around £900 total! Hard to believe that was a lot of money in those days.

Most of the photos are around Leith Harbour on South Georgia, and I’ve omitted the “gory whale pics” which can upset some people.
When they were away from home for so long – they had to make their own entertainment, like: Skiing (I have some pics of them “hotdog” skiing) Amateur Dramatics etc.

It must have been a bleak place in the winter!

Great images Al.

My grandfather was also in the whaling down there before the war but we have no images of his time there. Very good to see those though.

Went there a few times when working for British Antarctic, parts of the station were like the people just stood up and walked out, leaving plates etc on tables, other parts had been vandalised by passing squaddies, tourists etc.

The boat house used to have good supply of spare oars for our sailing lifeboats. :D
