Back to One Bike

I had a good year touring on my R12S back in 2015, including a trip to Spain, and a week in the Scottish Highlands. But at the end of it, I decided I needed something more comfortable for long days in the saddle, so got myself a Tiger 800. The Tiger is a great bike; comfortable, handles really well, is was totally reliable.

But with lockdowns curtailing the opportunity for riding, and other things taking up my time since, I began to wonder if I need two bikes. The Tiger 800 was always the go-to bike since I got it, mainly because it was so easy and had a big top box. But strangely, it never got under my skin like the R12S. So two weeks ago, the Tiger 800 and I parted company. My friends and wife said I’d regret it.

But I don’t! And I think the R12S has forgiven me for having a motorbike mistress. We’ve been out on a couple of longish rides (3 hours in the saddle), and I’m loving it again. Wonder if my old bones could withstand a tour? Hope to find out next year.

There's always the option of hiring a touring bike for the odd times it maybe needed?

Make like a German going to the Alps. Trailer your bike to your hotel of choice and ride unencumbered by luggage. If you take your partner they have the car to about in.

Could also share costs and holiday with a mate, two bikes on the trailer.

I never listen to the wife when it comes to bikes. In fact I never take better opinions. I learn the hard way.

If your bones are up for it do it. I think we all have more behind than in front.
