Father forgive me ....
... for I have sinned
As many here will know I've owned a BoxerCup since 2008 and have covered 24000 happy miles on it.
I regularly change the oil and filter, and during a recent gearbox oil change I changed to Mobil 1 SHC fully synthetic and combined with a 20g tube of LiquidMoly has resulted in a superslick gear change.
However, I've overlooked the air filter, in part because it's such a faff to get to and the previous owner had advised me he'd fitted a K&N. I'd previously already bought a K&N cleaning kit in anticipation of doing the job but always found a reason to prevaricate ... and it's the only job I've been lazy about
Last weekend I finally cleaned it ... and in my 50 years of motorcycling I've never seen such a sorry sight.
Now all cleaned and reoiled the bike has returned to giving me 60 mpg (it had dropped to 50mpg) and is pulling much better. I guess it's a credit to K&N that their filters still function under such duress!
So public apology to my BCR

Yes agreed air filter is very important for economy. No surprise to see a free flow (cough) filter bunged up. They are a complete waste of money. paper filters are better value imho, regularly checked and cleaned of course.

I've had filters look like that over the years , although only on my 11S , how on earth do you get 60mpg ? Mine averages 45mpg ,and has done since I purchased it back in '04, maybe that's why i don't use it as much lately , my latest addition of the 500cc variety manages between 70 and 100mpg .

Hi, as many will testify my riding style is um "spirited" so it surprises me I get 60 mpg on the BoxerCup too She has a full Remus and the aforementioned K&N but is standard apart from that, oh and the lambda sensor's been disconnected before I owned the bike and general advice here when I asked was if she was running fine don't worry about it.
11S's have an 18 litre tank with 5 litre of that reserve, so 13 litres to the little reserve light. 13 litres (and takes 13 litres to fill once the lights on) at 4.54 litres per (E5) UK gallon works to 2.86 UK gallons in main tank. Commuting 26 miles each way in mixed A / B roads and Motorway the light comes on at 180 miles so 62.93 mpg, I'll take that all day

That’s a surprising consumption.
I reckon your rear wheel circumference is low* causing an already optimistic speedo to be even more so.

I ride with Steve more often than the rest of the Trixters and I have also been known to ride "spiritedly".
I can reckon on regularly getting 50 to 55mpg, but my R1100S is actually bog standard in that it has the full cat equipped exhaust and silencers. Also has the stock air filter, but still runs the Lambda sensor.
I can get 60mpg, but have to ride like my granny to get it.

It did 60 mpg when I first had it then it dropped over the years to 50 and I thought the 60 memory was in my confused old memory but it's now back to 180 miles on it's 2.86 gallon tank

are you working out your 55 mpg on 3 gallons or 2.86 gallons John? I worked on 3 gallons for a while before realising how mahooosive the 5 litres of reserve takes up of the 18 litres So at 2.86 gallons the 180 comes out to 63mpg
My 800GS has 16 litres but only 2 of that is reserve so the 11S's 5 litres is a bit overkill I think

Well ... this weekend I spent out on the BCR upped the speeds by 10 mph (but still at legal limits in 30's and 40's of course) as was riding alone.
Also filled up with E10 in Llangollen (the petrol station in Llan doesn't have E5 ... note to Welsh Weekenders)
The extra speed and the use of E10 brought the average MPG down to 53 MPG ... I find similar MPG reductions with my other bikes on E10.

I've found on the Rockster that E10 is so in-efficient it's financially better to fill up with high-octane (E5). The E5 gets me something like 5-10% more miles. (seat of the pants judgement)

WRT Filter... That's why I've used an ENC* intake, which truly is free flow, for ages.. eschewing the standard and Lennie's tubes.
I use a standard paper filter which lasts for ages as flies bees and dust etc. aren't funnelled into it.
Also the filter can be changed without removing the tank, which is nice.
Plus it sounds quite rorty

Simon please expand more on your ENC intake - I've never heard of it.
What is it, where do you get one, how much etc.
A google search turned up absolutely zilch for ENC intake for R1100S.
