I used to feel the same way as conkerman about Guzzi's until the day I rode one.
I was out for a ride and just popped into a bike dealer, as you do.
Turns out they were Guzzi / Aprillia.
I took a shine to an 1100 Griso which I thought looked cool but I expressed my reservations to the dealer.
Reliability / parts availabilty / build quality etc.
He said, do you have you license on you
I did so off I went on a test ride.
I was knocked out with it.
It wasn't performance or anythig like that.
It was something else I couldn't put my finger on.
When I came back, I put a deposit down on a brand new one.
I kept that bike for 4 years and enjoyed every moment.
It's one of the few bikes I regret selling.
Quality and reliability = 10/10
Only had to order parts once after I dropped it and snapped the footrest hanger.
Arrived 1 week after ordering.
I changed it for an old 1100 Sport Corsa which was magic.
I swear to God the BMW might be superior technically and in terms of performance, but it's not as much fun.
Sadly, it was hurting my back big time so I had to get rid.
I was going to get another Griso but the R1200S came up locally so thought I'd give that a try, and I'm glad I did because I love it.
Guzzi's are great though, and yes very similar to air cooled Beemers.
Here's my old Sport Corsa 1100.
