Another BMW

Postby SP250 » Fri Dec 01, 2017 10:13 pm

Well, after a suitable lunch with Mr Parry a couple of weeks ago, he just mentioned that there was a good deal on a damaged bike I might just be interested in, as I could probably fix it fairly easily.
Having only gone for a chat and lunch, I had no idea that I would leave having bought another bike.
What with the trapped nerves issue still causing problems, I really needed a sit upright position from a bike now - rather than clip ons and rear sets.

Anyway cutting a long story down to size, I now own an F800ST, 2009 bike with 41,000 miles on it, one previous owner and a full BMW service history all for £300...............
The damage was a stripped thread inside the gearbox output shaft where the front drive belt pulley goes. Pulley had come off and destroyed the engine cover and half the cush drive too. BMW prices for all parts and labour to fit a new shaft, plus seals and gaskets etc £2200.

My costs - James Sherlock S/H pair of low mileage belt pulleys £89, Motorworks S/H drive pulley engine cover £21, Conti drive belt from Amazon £99.
A local engineering firm drilled out the first couple of damaged threads, then reclaimed remaining thread. Made a redesigned washer, and screw cut a new HT bolt, but at 12.4mm O/D to fully engage the new thread depth that they cut - 3 hours time plus Wurth hi-strength threadlock - £213.
Total cost £722.
Bloody expensive lunch I must say.
And if I could post pictures on this site I would, but having lost the will to live after an hour of trying I gave up.

Anyway thanks Steve, I now have a new touring bike to try and see if the neck will stand up to some biking miles when the weather warms up.

I was looking at those for the 12 months run up prior to ending up with my 1100S (another story). I never got round to test riding them but interested to hear what you make of the power.
And that’s a bargain for an ST!

I must say that I do enjoy reading about how people have done great engineering jobs - well done.

At that money I'm sure I could get to like an F800St , although I think you've just ruined any chance of selling it on here in the future

I wish I could do those things by myself, too.

Well done John, my wife has had an F800s for years and loves it. The ST has higher bars so I hope it fits you - gangly sod :D

Great story and if you do not get on with it you can sell it on for a tidy little profit.

Well done John. Are you on the Welsh run with it?

Yes Chris, planning on using the ST for Wales, although I guess I'll end up keeping tail end Charlie company for the day.
My trapped nerves are still not right and the damping is pretty crap at both ends of the bike, so I can't push it too hard till I can get a new shock and sort out the forks.
