Hi there everyone,

I own a beautiful 04 BMW R1100S. It has two BMW Touring side panniers that i can use for days out.

I am heading over to france next month and would like to have a top box as well, ideally a 50 litre one so it can hold both mine and my wife's helmets in.

The question i have is, can i fit a top box to my bike as it already has the arms mounted for the side panniers? I can take pictures if its easier?

Any help would be much appreciated as i literally don't have a clue and i don't want to spend nearly £300 on a givi plate, top box and back rest support if it won't fit to the bike?

I think you need the givi rack side arms for the rear rack to go on.

yep sounds like Givi rack time - about £70 - 80 for the arms then the box - looks as ugly as sin but it is practical. Mine has the BMW luggage system and a Givi top box so it can be done

So do the Givi arms attach to the side pannier touring arms? Don't suppose any of you have any example pictures do you?

The Givi arms attach to the subframe, they are level with the bottom edge of the rear body panels and are under the pannier rails. Be prepared to tweak the arms a bit to get them to fit properly, mine certainly needed it. Hopefully you can see the pictures on my old for sale post, scroll down a bit as I don't think the link worked.

My R1100S had both BMW panniers and Givi rack......I took the Givi rack out and it is nowhere connected with the BMW panniers system.

Think carefully about this. BMW do not make a rack and top case for this model. There is a reason for that. They state the luggage carrying capacity and max speed for the touring cases. There is a reason for that also. To fit a 50 litre wheelie bin loaded with God knows what on an aftermarket knock up would not be recommended by BMW or supported by your insurers in the event of a claim.

Knowing how fragile the cast lugs on the c frame are (that take all the imposed loads of rider, pillion, touring cases and top box not to mention the impact loads of pot holes, road undulations etc) would suggest clarity of thought about this. Apart from that you may get arrested by the fashion police for spoiling such a beautiful bike

Is the right answer .... don't do it

The other "right answer" is to get a huge tank bag and put the weight where it will least affect the handling.
Maybe a small rucksack for the Mrs - but she won't thank you for that.
Those subframe lugs are not very substantial on the 11s.

Also please have in mind that on the givi rack there are 4 different sticker saying that the Max weight is 6 kgr .
The weight of an Empty 52 Lt case is ...5 kgr !
As you can imagine the proper use of it
is as a backrest for the passenger and maybe a couple of rain coats or a spare jacket when on the move.
When you arrive at your destination you can Lock two helmets in it .

Well, I have both Givi rack and small Givi box, plus a Baglux tank cover and bag for sale!
Latter is listed on here somewhere.

maybe a tail pack would be a solution; I have one on mine which zips on and carries a surprising amount of stuff.
