On early examples, i believe pre 2000, the disc is mounted directly onto the wheel boss. The assembly consists of the disc, followed by wavy washer, stainless bush and then bolt. Later models have a stainless washer between the disc and wheel (theses are the bits that cost £2 each from BMW)
After ...

Cheers Gus.
Problem now sorted.
You were right about the BMW washers being rather expensive. I got some stainless M8 washers from a local fasteners shop for 10p each. theses were a little wider than the BM ones, but the same outside diameter (about 19mm). The mounting bosses on my wheels had worn so ...

Hi paul.

This problem sounds too similar to the one i had a month or so back. Have a check of the wires as they exit the left hand fuse pod (disconnect the pod from the frame to do this). My wires had rubbed through on the edge of the relay box underneath. I recently had a look at my mates 15k mile ...

I run out out of petrol embarassingly often. I seem to have a phobia of stopping once rolling, and my warning light is bust.
So far it's always been between 140 and 150 miles, and i've managed to put 18.5 litres in everytime after (bog standard tank / filler). This has normally been under ...

Have you asked your pillion to try riding with hands on knees, or round your waist (if you have a belt on your jacket, they can grab that)?
I guess it's down to personnal preference, but most folk i know say this is much better than a grab rail. Grab rails feel secure, but hands on knees gives ...

I've been running 36/42, so no gain to get there.
Squiting the beast out of bends is what it's all about, but there's just not that many bends on the a46 / m50 / a449! So although there's certainly not a really flat section in the middle, it has generally stripped the middle out.
I recon it's ...

I think if the bike was totally smooth, it'd detract from it. Like darth said "give me a throbbing machine every time"
At least the vibes from a twin are good 'ol honest rumbling. I cant stand the high frequency buzzing of fours. Is it 'rocking couple' or some such thing that makes 'em do it? So ...

Rattling Discs

Did any of you ever get any joy on BMW fixing front wheel/brake disc problem?
I've just changed pads, and one of the slave pistons had started sticking a bit (and it was just a bit). Result = seriously f*ked front wheel. There was already a worrying amount of play, but now, theres about 3 - 4mm side ...

Vibes

I've read a lot here about people being upset by vibration on the S. I've been thinking about it a bit whilst riding. Do they smooth out with age? I've now got 40k on mine, 10k of mine in the last 7 months. Vibes? what vibes? There's a friendly rumble when cruising. I don't suppose jap bike have ...

Pillion footrests

Is my bike the only one, or is it a 'standard feature' for the pillion footrests to completely destroy themselves under vibration. Mine are to such a state now that the ball bearings have departed and they sag to such an angle that the missus gets twisted ankles! I havalso have to use tie wraps to ...

Steel is such an underrated material. Aluminium has few advantages over it, the main one being it's ability to be used in mure complex extrusions and castings. Weight vs stifness, there's rarely much to gain, especially when using a formed section such as the wishbone. I'll bet BMW spent a lot of R ...
